It was nine in the morning when they crucified Him with two criminals - one on each side and Jesus in the middle. The Roman system of crucifixion was executed in grotesque and humiliating fashion and it produced the maximum amount of pain. The word excruciating comes from Latin excruciare, to crucify. It means unbearably painful, or extreme agony.
